A home wellness room is a dedicated space built for physical and mental recovery. It usually includes some combination of a sauna, a cold plunge, a meditation or yoga area, and sometimes a small recovery lounge. It is different from a spa bathroom, which we covered in an earlier post on luxury spa bathroom remodels. A spa bathroom upgrades a room you already have. A wellness room is usually new space entirely, carved out of an unused garage bay, a pool cabana, or a guest suite that rarely gets used.
Why Homeowners Are Asking for This Now
The numbers back up what we are hearing in client meetings. Global wellness real estate grew from 151 billion dollars in 2017 to 876 billion dollars in 2025, and the Global Wellness Institute projects it will reach 1.8 trillion dollars by 2030. That growth is not limited to hotels and resorts anymore. It is showing up in single family homes across the country, including right here in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Luxury buyers are driving a lot of this shift. A recent survey covered by New Jersey Realtors found that 41 percent of luxury buyers want a sauna or steam room in their next home. The National Association of Home Builders has flagged the same trend, noting that buyers increasingly want spaces built for wellness activities and a stronger connection to nature.
The Sauna and Cold Plunge Combination
The most requested pairing right now is an infrared sauna next to a cold plunge tub. Homeowners use the combination for muscle recovery after a workout, for stress relief at the end of a long day, or as a daily ritual on its own. In South Florida, this pairing works especially well because it can open directly onto a patio or pool deck, letting homeowners move between hot and cold without going back inside.
Designing a Home Wellness Room for South Florida
Florida’s climate adds a few requirements that homeowners in drier states do not have to think about. Humidity control is the biggest one. An infrared sauna and a cold plunge both introduce moisture into a room, so proper ventilation and a dedicated dehumidification system are not optional. Waterproofing needs the same attention we give a spa bathroom, with a continuous membrane system in every wet area.
Electrical load is the second consideration. Infrared saunas and cold plunge chillers both draw serious power, and older South Florida homes often need a panel upgrade to support them. This is also where permitting comes in. Structural changes, new electrical circuits, and plumbing for a cold plunge system typically require permits through your local building department, which is worth planning for early rather than discovering mid project.
